If you are thinking of applying for a job or placement Do you have any jobs? Unfortunately not. It's a small studio and a job comes up about every four or five years, so please do not write to us if you are looking for a job. It is better to direct your time towards places that will be able to take you on. Do we take people on placement? Yes we do, but there is a long waiting list so you need to apply at least 6 months in advance. Also you will need to have somewhere to stay in the UK. We do not help with accomodation costs or travel expenses. Does that mean you don't pay for people on placement? No we don't. That may seem unfair but unlike other companies we don't treat the person on placement as cheap labour. They are set projects and are encouraged to spend a large amount of time doing their own work. It takes a lot of effort from us as well as effort from the student. How long is the placement for? Usually between one and three months, sometimes longer by special arrangement. There is a trial period of two weeks at the beginning to make sure you fit in. How do I apply? Send a PDF of your work to this email: portfolio@barnbrook.net. Make sure it is of a manageable size and the whole package is a well designed presentation where it is easy to see your work and understand who you are. Anything that will help me get a placement We don't care about what college you went to or if you can use Photoshop and Quark, Most important thing is creativity, passion and a good knowledge of typography. Don't send us a generic letter where you don't seem to have a clue what we do as it will be put into the trash. A knowledge of Japanese is helpful but not essential as we do a lot of work for Japan so we do look kindly on Japanese applicants. When will I find out if I have got a placement? We will contact you if you have got a placement. If you don't hear from us then from that you will be able to tell you haven't. We do look at every portfolio that is sent to us but because of the amount of requests (about 5 a day) we cannot reply to everybody individually. Please do not call us up or hassle us as this will not help. After all this, is it worth applying? We believe that if you are right for us you will be spotted very quickly, so yes it is.

If you are a student looking for an interview or answers to your project questionaire Can you send me some free fonts/samples of your work? We set up this website specifically for people to access samples of our work as we don't have enough copies to send out to all the requests so you will have to use this website for your research. We do not give out copies of free fonts for student projects under any circumstances. Although we are a little more lenient about students using pirate copies we are not going to hand them out to people. I want so send you some questions for my thesis or project its very important you answer them Currently we get around 50 requests a week for interviews or for Jonathan Barnbrook to answer thesis or project questionaires, all of which the senders regard as really important. So although some are answered many are not. Its fairly hit and miss, he is busy doing what he loves best - design work, so he fits them in when he can. Our advice is first before you contact us please check the interviews section of virusfonts.com here and here as many of the questions that students ask are answered there. What is the wrong kind of questionaire to send to you or other designers? Some students send out the huge complicated questionaires to 50 designers and do not realise the amount of time it takes to respond properly, other questionaires are so open-ended that the time taken to answer means that it is impossible to even begin to respond to. The answer is to do a bit of more of the research work yourself. Either in the questions you ask or seeing if they have been answered elsewhere. People who have no idea what we do and send a very generic letter will go unanswered. Please also be polite, if you receive a reply then write back and say you received it, its not much to ask but sometimes its exhausting spending time on stuff and not knowing if the person even used it.
