Formats / OpenType
OpenType is an exciting development that looks set to become the new standard format for handling typefaces. Not only is OpenType a cross-platform format but it also offers the opportunity to embed expanded character sets within a single file. This means that a number of different styles can be contained within one simplified OpenType package. For example, where other formats would require two files for a regular and alternate version, it is possible to contain both of these styles in a single OpenType file. At present, in order to access these alternate glyphs, you will need to work in applications that support OpenType formats (e.g. indesign, illustrator, photoshop).
Please note that only OT fonts contain extra open type features. All other fonts released in an opentype format do not include these features.
N.B. At present the various applications that can support Opentype and any associated features operate very differently. Virus is following a features protocol that we hope will soon become the operating norm (one that will enables access and allows for the development of this platform). For example, the alternate character designs within Regime OT are accessed by the feature tag ‘stylish alternates’ (.salt). This option can be applied universally to a selected text by a simple click in both Illustrator and Photoshop (in the OpenType palette of CS, CS2, CS3) but would require individual replacement in Indesign (using the Glyphs palette). Until this issue has been resolved, we would urge you to consider how you are most likely to use our fonts alternate character set and which application you will be working in. Please contact us if you would like further help in making a format decision.

Pricing
You may have noticed that our OT font is not equal in price to the other font formats we offer. This is because our OT fonts contain at least two styles (and also require much more detailed development times). So, for example, if you wanted Regime Ultra in both its default and alternate styles you would need to purchase two Type1 files (‘Regime Ultra’ and ‘Regime Ultra Alternate’). However, purchasing the single OpenType file ‘Regime OT Ultra’ provides you with both the regular and alternate styles. We have reflected this aspect in the pricing.
